FAQs
1. Why Reflex Quotient Self-Defense?
Reflex Quotient Self-defense techniques, when applied accurately, are the most effective way of ridding yourself of an aggressor swiftly. They are accessible whenever you want them, and in any one situation there are a number of possible techniques available. Many techniques are simple and easy to apply which means that absolutely anyone can use them. In short, Reflex Quotient self-defense is a very practical, effective and accessible form of protection which empowers the user and drastically increases their chance of survival in an adverse or potentially life-threatening situation.
2. What this work shop can offer you?
Reflex Quotient Programs have been specifically designed with the average Indian woman in mind and covers the necessary principles in dealing successfully with common eventualities. It attempts to teach participants the various techniques available and their proper application, including knowledge of the possible target areas on the attacker's body.
3. There are many other martial arts in the world like karate, kung-fu and so on. So what makes Reflex Quotient Self Defense
different from the others?
Martial arts / Self Defense are a part of any human civilization. In fact the system of fighting is the most necessary adaptation required for any living creature for survival. Thus different civilizations adapted different martial techniques over the course of the evolution of mankind. What makes the Programs of Reflex Quotient different from the traditional styles of martial arts is that this is a complete system by itself imparting knowledge in the use of Empty hand techniques, weapons, flexibility and strength training. Reflex Quotient Self Defense incorporates best practiced techniques from various styles of Martial Arts taught.
4. All that one wants is to train in survival techniques, why do martial artists professing different styles spend 10 years or more in
learning a comprehensive system ?
If you are interested in learning street survival techniques only, then you can learn only that part of the RQ Self Defense and later, if you have the desire to learn in depth, you can contact us at IKKAI.org any time. Most people begin training for Martial Arts for street fighting/survival, some for Fitness, some for Meditation, but eventually become full fledged Budo practitioners.
5. Who can practice Reflex Quotient Self Defense?
Practically anyone can learn the techniques of RQ Self Defense. The Younger the better. But I know persons aged 40 years and above making tremendous progress in health and fitness. Even persons over 60 years of age can benefit from Martial Arts/ Self Defense training but of course such trainees should be selective in their training.
6. Many martial arts make people invincible in the dojo but almost helpless in the open street?
Well. If someone is invincible in the dojo but helpless in the street when confronted with real life situations, the fault is either with the training imparted in the dojo or the mindset of the particular practitioner. Sometimes both. Reflex Quotient participants are imparted training to deal with real life situations that in the unfortunate incident of a street confrontation the RQ participant will almost always survive – provided the participant undertakes the training program in the jutsu version ( lethal techniques). If one learns Self Defense for the pleasure of learning and interested in philosophy and like then such a person may find himself/ herself helpless in the street.
7. How is Reflex Quotient training structured?
Participants can start with doing solo forms and progress to working out in pairs to practice:
Empty hand fighting
Grappling – Blocks/ Holds/ Chokes
Short stick – Yawara / Kubotan/ Koga (a small stick used to hit the vital points)
Knives – Defense against blades
8. I do lot of Gym training and bag work using kicks and punches. The strength training is sufficient to survive against a physical
attack. In that case what is the relevance of a martial art like Karate, Kung-Fu in the modern world?
Agreed, you do lot of strength training and bag work. Ok, if the other guy is stronger than you, you will be floored 9 out of 10 times. If strength vs. strength is all about fighting then the stronger will always win and none of the martial systems of the word would have evolved or survived. RQ techniques teach you ways to use your own strength and that of your opponents to your own advantage. Mere bag work and lifting weights will not give you this advantage.
9. A Gun can kill a person quickly and efficiently. In that case is there any relevance in learning to fight with short sticks?
The answer is yes and no. If all had access to a gun and everyone is authorized to use a firearm in every situation then what you say is absolutely right. But you cannot always carry and use a pistol or a gun. Only extreme situations demand such extreme measures. More over owning a firearm needs a valid License. Even if you have a gun you need the martial mind to use it and martial traditions develop the martial mind. Further you have to answer to the law enforcing authorities. Also the physical and health benefits of exercise and techniques built in RQ Self Defense and Fitness programs cannot be obtained by owning a firearm.
10. Most Indians follow a vegetarian diet. Is it a prerequisite for training in Self Defense?
It is wrong to say that most Indians follow a vegetarian diet. Vegetarian diet is advised for those who follow satvic karma like meditation, Pranayama and so on as it prepares the body for the rigors of certain exercises in meditation etc. The benefits of following a vegetarian diet from the view point of health is being accepted all over the world. Many Indian wrestlers who weigh as much as 100Kg or more structure their diet around milk, almonds and ghee. In the Ayurveda system of medicine many of the benefits of meat and other non- vegetarian ingredients of a diet are described elaborately. So it comes to one’s personal preferences; whether you want to follow a vegetarian diet, or Non – vegetarian diet. Again if you do not wish to go the non- vegetarian way then still it is ok to carry on with RQ Self Defense training.
